How I do it, mostly the traditional way.
Making a ton of sketches.
Getting distracted by stuff and ending up doing the inking about a day before my own deadline, or
if I'm possessed I've got about a month worth of updates piled within in the buffer.
Just recently I decided to try and use a glass table and some light underneath.
Normally I would just put ink on top of the pencil lines, then erase them when the ink dries, however that a tad sloppy and makes a mess.
Blue pencils are good but are horrible to draw with. but hey they don't show up on the scanner.
Anyhow, another reason my drawings can be a bit lacking in details, I'm a bit sloppy with the ink and a4 is a killer on the details. I just can't afford spend one paper for each frame.
but they it's easier to make it look good now that I've got a cheap glass plate from IKEA and a light underneath.
Sometimes the old methods gives remarkable results, the rest of the touch-up is done on a computer.

a4 allows for plenty of details, never been an issue for me. Artograph portable light-table ftw. The lighting is much more even than on the vika artur-tables from IKEA. I have one of those, and I'm still just using the portable one.

I use two kinds of blue pencils, one light for sketching and a darker one for sharper details, and a crowquill and indian ink (it's not for everyone, it takes practice) so I recommend using Pigma Micron pens, size 005 to 08, they're sold in pack, but you can buy them separate.
I got one of those big IKEA tables with built in light board, but since my laptop and scanner is in another room, i do my work on a homemade drawing table.
